Another luxury sports car brand goes electric

Maserati Electric Car Plans

Maserati plans electrified sports car

Hot on the heels of other big-name car manufacturers such as Ferrari and Porsche, Maserati is the latest sports car giant to announce the release of its first electrified model. Based on its classic Ghibli saloon, the new eco-friendly car will be an electric hybrid, which means it can be powered by both an electric motor and petrol powered combustion engine.

The Ghibli is expected to be a petrol plug-in hybrid with a lengthy all-electric range and super-low CO2 emissions. According to various sources, Maserati plans on launching a range of electric cars including a next-generation GranTurismo and GranCabrio.

A luxury car that's a plug-in hybrid

In order to support the production of the new Ghibli hybrid, it’s reported that Maserati is investing sums in the region of €800m to update facilities at their Turin manufacturing plant. This will also be the birthplace of the proposed new GranTurismo and GranCabrio.

Alongside the introduction of electrification, Maserati is planning on developing their self-drive technology and hope that all future models will include driver assistance. This feature will allow drivers to hand over speed control to the car when on a motorway while maintaining control over the direction of the vehicle and an awareness of surroundings. Maserati is working on creating a more advanced system that will see the car control its direction as well as its speed, in theory leaving the driver to sit back and enjoy the ride.
