Row of Porsche's top cars

For decades, Porsche has been the pinnacle of sports car pedigree and has released a number of excellent prestige vehicles to the delight of fans. However, whilst owning any Porsche model will set you back at least several thousand pounds, the cars named in the latest video released by Porsche will really make your eyes water!

5. Porsche 917/30 Spyder

Coming in at number five on the countdown: the 1973 Porsche 917/30 Spyder racing car. This 1,200-horsepower vehicle was originally designed to race in the Can-Am racing series and is capable of 0 to 60 in 2.1 seconds. It also boasts an air-cooled 12 cylinder engine, each cylinder capable of 100 brake power each.

With no computer-aided driver technology, the Porsche 917/30 is a manual driver’s dream and has been driven by the likes of Mark Donohue; it’s really no surprise that it recently sold for $3 million.

4. 1956 Porsche 550A Spyder

Fourth on the list, it’s the 1956 Porsche 550A Spyder which was sold for just over $5.1 million. Dubbed “The Giant Killer”, this classic model was the first Porsche ever developed for solely racing purposes and overcame its stronger rivals using its 1.5-litre diminutive engine.

3. Porsche 911 GT1 Strassenversion

The Porsche 911 GT1 Stressenversion enters the list at number three, with one recently selling in the US for over $5.65 million. Capable of 600 horsepower thanks to its 996-based water-cooled twin-turbocharged engine, this is a beautiful and sleek road-legal racing car.

Only 25 were ever produced following the success of the GT1 Evo at Le Mans in 1998 and gives you the unique opportunity to take a custom-built racing car to the road.

2. Porsche 956

Driven by racing legends like Derek Bell, Al Hulbert and Jacky Ickx, the Porsche 956 was the car leading at Le Mans in 1983. It was one of the first racing cars to ever use ground effects to improve aerodynamic performance and had a unique 2.65-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six engine that shot flames out the exhaust on the side.

The Porsche 956 was the star of Group C and defined car racing scene in the 1980s, which is why it comes in at number two on the list, with one sold for $10.1 million dollars.

1. Porsche 917 K

Finally, we’ve arrived at the top of the list – sold for just over $14 million at auction, it’s one of the most widely recognised racing cars in history, the Porsche 917 K. Featured in the popular 2015 film “Le Mans” with Steve McQueen, and the first Porsche to win Le Mans outright; it also dominated at the Gulf Livery in 1970 and 1971.

The Porsche 917 K’s 4.5 litre, the air-cooled 12-cylinder engine developed by Hans Metzger is capable of 630 horsepower, which careered the racing car to over 220mph on the Mulsanne Straight. Its sleek, aerodynamic design and the success to back it up, the Porsche 917 K is acknowledged as one of the greatest racing cars of all time, earning its position as the most expensive Porsche model ever sold.
