Porsche unveils new Cayman GT4 Clubsport Rally Car
And it could soon be approved for production!
The news follows tweets from Porsche that hinted they would be running a new rally car prototype at a course rally during Rally Germany this month.
Porsche used to be a frontrunner on the dirt track, producing infamous rally cars such as the 911 SC RS during the 1980s, however, the Cayman GT4 Clubsport marks the first effort by Porsche to actively re-enter the rally car scene for decades.
The new Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport features four large lights on the bonnet as well as added steel plating protection for the flat underbody and impact foam in the side doors. Apart from these external changes, not much else has changed in terms of power upgrades, and the Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport retains the Cayman GT4’s 3.8 litre engine and PDK gearbox.
Whilst the Cayman GT4 Clubsport remains a concept car, Porsche has let on that they are waiting to gauge public interest during its appearance at the Rally Germany course before it begins on the 16th August, before deciding on potentially putting it into production.
Porsche had this to say: “We’re looking forward to seeing how the rally world responds to our FIA R-GT concept study…Based on the feedback and the interest from potential customers, we will then decide by the end of the year whether we’ll develop in the mid-term a competition car for near-standard rallying based on a future Porsche model.”
The Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport rally car will be taken to the track by Romain Dumas, winner of Le Mans and holder of the Pikes Peak hillclimb record.
